No , jee mains is not compulsory for studying engineering but yes if you want to get a seat in a good engineering  college like nit and other government engineering colleges then you should appear in jee mains examination.

There are a number of state entrance examination for engineering for which you can appear. There are a number of entrance exams for engineering like BITSAT , VITEEE, SRMJEE , WBJEE etc , you can give any of these if you want to get into a good engineering college.

Hello there. Hope you are doing good. I would like to tell you that it is not mandatory to have JEE Main sore in order to get admission in an engineering degree. However, it is always advisable to take JEE Mains exam as almost all the colleges accept JEE Mains score for engineering programmes. But there are many private colleges also which conducts their own entrance exam for engineering courses and does not require you to have JEE Mains score.
