It is not important to get a laptop in 1st year. It is completely your choice as to buy it or not. If you want to learn new technologies in software industry then you can go ahead otherwise no!

Firstly congratulations on choosing such a good and in demand course.

Yes,you will surely need a laptop in the 1 st year.As you have taken up Cse as your branch you will have computer related tasks to be performed such as coding , making presentations etc.

In first semester it might not be that important but in 2 semester you will be dealing with C/C++ and it is better if you have laptop so that you can practice coding and some colleges also provide coding platforms so that students can practice.Also students will have to submit projects in C/C++ at the end of semester which needs a laptop.
