This may depend upon your college hostel. You should call them up and ask whether they will let you set up a desktop in your room and you may require to take permission for the same.

But I would suggest that having a laptop is more convenient as you can carry it around with you like when you go to the college, or library or have to travel.

But if you think you need a dekptop, then call the hostel management and ask them if you will get permission for the same.
