You can go for self preparation only when all your concepts and basics are clear. Make sure you know how to solve difficult problems . Otherwise you should opt for offline coaching . They will teach you from the start and will clear your doubts . They will give you insight knowledge of the exam .

GATE is  a tough competitive examination due to the number of applicants it observes. Like evry other competitve examination it is based on the level of clear concepts you have and the base you build upon the concepts. So whether you wish self coaching or coaching institute it depends on you but I believe that getting coaching is better as there are always some hidden tricks and techniques which comes with experience which only a teacher has.

It all depends on you. when you are capable of doing things on your own and making a proper time table with proper schedule, then you can go for self preparation. Time Management is very important in case of self preparation.

Incase you are incapable of managing things, then you can join a coaching Institute.

Lots of aspirants crack gate every year without any coaching. In present scenario, There are lots of resource available there for self preparation. You should go with GATE Syllabus. First analys GATE Previous years paper then start preparing according to that. You can join Test series of good institute for self evaluation every week. If your concepts are clear then you should go without preparation.
