It is not a compulsion to have a laptop however it saves you lot of time. Having a laptop means you can carry it and work anywhere and not be reliant on your home computer always. B.tech involves lot of assignments, projects and reading/viewing of study material for which it is preferable to have a laptop. However, it is upto you to own one or not.
