No it's not compulsory to get application for engineering exams. It depends upon you whether you want to get admission into college right after class q2th or you wished to take one year drop after completing class 12th.

See, there are various colleges in which you can get admission on direct basis after completing and getting class 12th result.

But you must understand that mostly the entrance examinations are held during class 12th.

Thus way it helps the candidates in getting good marks and a proper routine.
