See in India there are three types of Engineering college:

• Central Government Funded Engineering Institute (IIT's/NIT's/IIEST etc)
• State Government Funded Engineering Institute
• Private Engineering Insitute.

Now if you want to go for any engineering college you need to qualify an entrance examination.

Now the best engineering institute in India is said to be IIT's and NIT's for BTech course. This is because the education standards in this colleges are very good and the college offers amazing exposure to its students both academically and in terms of placements. To get in IIT's you have to qualify JEE MAINS and Advanced examination and for NIT's you have to qualify JEE MAINS. Both of this exams are highly competitive examination and is said as one of the most hard examination.

Now if you wish to get admission in state funded government colleges you have to appear for entrances conducted by the state entrance board. This is state specific. Some of the well know state level entrances are:

• WBJEE
• KCET
• OJEE
• MHT CET

Now for private college you have to appear for either the national level/state level entrances. If you get average rank in this examination then you can get admission in private colleges. Now many engineering colleges such as VIT, SRM, MANIPAL etc conducts there own entrances. So depending on the examination the college is participating in , you have to qualify that examination and you will be allocated a seat based on the rank you obtain in this examination.

Now if you want to go for Diploma in Engineering then you have to apply for polytechnic entrances. BTech is a UG course and it deals with more advanced knowledge compared to that of Diploma in Engineering course.
