Hello sir,
Firstly, This doesn’t mean a rank in JEE Advanced. You’re not alloted a rank in JEE Advanced Rank List. The vacant seats reserved for SC, ST and PwD candidates, which don’t get filled in the counselling will be allotted to the candidates of respective categories for admission to a preparatory course. Preparatory courses mean that for one year you will be prepared and trained in IIT, and then after one year you’ll be declared ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ according to which you will get a direct admission in an undergraduate course from next academic session.
So, the rank you have is for Preparatory Course, which is different from an actual undergraduate programme in IIT.
The Drawbacks are you will be losing a year if you are going to be declared fail,But on the positive side, you will be trained in IIT for the one year which you might consider lost if you are declared fail.
The benefit is the exposure and knowledge without the pressure of deadlines as in a undergraduate student will really help your ward to study and excel with a better knowledge even if he is considered failed, which hopefully wont happen in his/her case.
Isuggest you to go for it.Anyways its your ward's choice ,not yours or mine.
Good Luck!!
