First of all, Congratulations on your friends score. With this percentile, there are decent chances that he can be admitted in any of the NIT's as he has S.T reservation as well. But, I am sorry to say that even if there is a great percentile in jee mains if unable to clear any of the subjects in the 12th board then they can not get admission in NIT. If that's the problem he needs to clear the subject in supplementary then there might be chances of him to get admission in NITs. I hope the board correction will be easier and your friend will be able to clear all the subjects so that he can directly go to any of the NITs with his great percentile.
