Hi Saurabh,

Your score and percentage are good...The possibilities for career are either you go for PSUs based on the score and % ,or you go for further studies such as M.Tech, M.S, PhD ,MBA.Its on you where to go..If you want government job then go for PSUs.

All the best.

Dear Sourabh

After GATE there are generally two possiblities.

1. Job in govt. sector / PSUs.

2. Higher Education i.e. M.Tech / M.S. / MBA / PhD.

Now if you are targetting PSUs, they are divided into three catogery

  • Maharatna
  • Navratna
  • Miniratna

Maharatna and Navratna PSUs are generally PSUs which have a very good quality of job and best pay packages in industry, whereas miniratnas are decent government owned companies, their annual profitability is less then Maharatnas and Navratnas, the work pressure is little more over there.

For PSUs, your GATE rank should not be over 200. The lower the better. Although sometimes candidates get lucky and get placed even after 200 rank, but chances are next to zero.

The cutoff marks for PSUs varies from year to year, but anywhere below 800, the chances are very less.

You can checkout all the PSUs and their cutoff marks in the link below.

If you are targetting higher education like M.Tech / MS / MBA / PhD in IITs/IISc/IIITs/NITs.

You have decent chances of getting admission to them.

The selection process is different for different institutes. For M.Tech many institues provide direct admissions, whereas many conduct a seperate test and interview. For MBA in IITs, NITIE mumbai etc, you will have to appear for GD and PI. For PhDs, if your B.Tech CGPA is more then 8.0 or percentage more then 80%, you very good chances for getting into it which will based on interview.

The M.Tech / MS programs are of two catogery in IITs/IISc.

1. M.Tech/MS in same discipline as B.Tech:

Since you are from ECE, the same discipline M.Tech/MS are Communication Engineering, Microelectronics/VLSI, Embedded Systems, Power Engineering etc.

2. M.Tech/MS/PhD in interdisciplinary branches.

These includes newly formed research centers and labs etc. in different IITs/IISc. Some examples are Auronautical Engineering, Cognitive Sciences, Bio Medical Engineering, Nano Sciences etc.

As per your score, the chances of getting into interdisciplinary courses are good. The cutoffs for these is usually lower then the same discipline cources.

Please fill the COAPS very nicely and you can easily get into some of the good IITs.

You can check previous year cutoffs for different IITs/IISc/NITs/IIITs here.
