Hello aspirant,

Particularly in the General Studies and optional subjects, subjects related to the arts and humanities can provide an advantage in certain UPSC test questions.  Popular subjects include political science, geography, sociology, and history.  However, it's crucial to choose topics you can study thoroughly and are genuinely interested in.

So by focusing on your strong subjects you can definitely crack UPSC.

Thank you

Hope it helps you

Hello ,

As per your mentioned query , if you want to crack UPSC exam then you have to be determined and discipline towards it. You have to analyse the syllabus of UPSC first to understand about the exam. Research very well for this exam. Then gather all the resources which are useful for you. Make a time table for the exam.

Hello there,

That’s a great decision. With a Humanities background , you already have a strong foundation for the UPSC Civil Services Exam , since many topics like polity, history, geography, economics, and current affairs are part of both your academics and the UPSC syllabus.

Here’s a simple plan to help you start your UPSC preparation:

1. Understand the UPSC Exam Structure

  • Prelims : Objective-type (GS Paper I + CSAT)

  • Mains : 9 descriptive papers including essay, GS Papers I–IV, and optional subject.

  • Interview : Personality Test

    2. Start with NCERT Books (Class 6 to 12)

  • History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology

  • These build strong conceptual understanding.

    3. Choose Your Optional Subject Wisely

Since you’re from humanities, you can consider options like:

  • Political Science & International Relations

  • Sociology

  • History

  • Geography
Choose one that you are confident in and enjoy studying.

    4. Standard Reference Books

  • Indian Polity – M. Laxmikanth

  • Spectrum – Modern History

  • GC Leong – Physical Geography

  • Nitin Singhania – Indian Art and Culture

  • Economic Survey, India Year Book (for advanced prep)

    5. Current Affairs

  • Read The Hindu or Indian Express daily

  • Follow PIB, Yojana, and Monthly current affairs compilations

    6. Practice

  • Solve previous year papers (both prelims and mains)

  • Take regular mock tests

  • Improve your answer writing for mains

    7. Coaching (if needed)

  • You can self-study, but if needed, consider offline or online coaching.

    8. Time Required

  • Ideally, 1 to 1.5 years of consistent preparation is needed.

I hope this answer helps you. If you have more queries, feel free to share your questions with us, and we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you, and I wish you all the best in your bright future.
