Dear Student,

Poverty is the state of being poor. We find around us hoards of people who are unable to afford the minimum necessities of life. They face the problem of getting one square meal a day. They are generally engaged in petty jobs to earn their livelihood. They lead a miserable life, which is worse than that of brutes.

Unemployment and poverty are two mutually exclusive yet co-related factors that have harmed Indians growth. Poverty leads to criminal activities such as robbery, theft, murder. It is responsible for malnutrition and also gives rise to the issue of overpopulation. The government has launched many programmes to help the poor and needy, but most have miserably failed to achieve their moto.

Lack of education compels a person for less paying jobs & it makes him poorer.

Helpless with hunger and poverty they adopt evil practices to combat with their circumstances. It is poverty that leads to criminal activities like robbery, thefts, murder, kidnapping and arson. The young street urchins begging for money or the young boys falling prey to drugs and alcohol are few of the causes of poverty.

Deprived of proper amenities, such as food, clothes and education, they often have to borrow large amount of money from the money lenders. Sometimes, it takes generations to pay off the debt and sometimes it makes a criminal out of the poverty stricken individual.

Therefore, it is suffice to say that poverty compels humans to indulge in social evils and nefarious practices. If we want to eradicate social evils, we must, alleviate their sufferings and poverty first.

Poverty is a social evil. We can also contribute to control it. We can donate old clothes to poor people. We can also sponsor a needy child’s education or utilize our free time by teaching poor students. Remember, before wasting food, somebody is still sleeping hungry.

There is no denying the fact that poverty is the cause of many social evils; but it is not the cause of all the evils. Poverty may tempt the poor to criminal activities. Lack of resources results in many problems. For example, the poor may not be able to send their children to school. As the saying goes ‘An empty mind is a devil’s den’, the free children might get involved in anti-social activities such as thievery, pick-pocketing, violence, drugs, smuggling, etc. The lack money might force them to do bad things. Lack of education can further worsen their decision-making.

The Government should make poverty eradication its first priority and provide enough resources to people. Poverty of any kind is a blemish for a country.

Hope this information is useful to you.

Thank you.
