The Indian Police Service examination (IPS EXAM) is a part of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) each year.


Eligibility criteria


Physical Criteria

  • Minimum Height - Men - 165cm, Women - 150cm
  • Relaxable minimum height is 160cm (men) and 145cm (women) i.e. for candidates belonging to ST and races such as Gorkhas, Garhwalias, Assamese, Kumaonis, Nagaland Tribals, etc.
  • Minimum Chest Girth - Men/Women: 84cm 79cm


  1. Myopia (including cylinder) should not exceed minus 4.00D
  2. Hypermyopia (including cylinder) should not exceed plus 4.00D
  3. Spectacles are permitted
  4. Distant vision for better eye(Corrected Vision) should be 6/6 or 6/9
  5. Distant vision for the worse eye(Uncorrected Vision) should be 6/12 or 6/9
  6. Near vision should be J1 and J2 respectively
  7. High grade color vision is required and Binocular vision is needed.


Nationality

Must be a citizen of Indian

  1. Subject of Nepal
  2. Subject of Bhutan
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 for permanent settlement in India.
  • Migrant from any of the following countries for permanently settling in India:
  • Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

Age Relaxation :

  1. Upper age limit for General category: 32 years.
  2. Upper age limit for OBC: 35 years.
  3. Upper age limit for SC/ST: 37 Years.


  • Upper age limit for Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: 35 years.
  • Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service: 37 years.
  • Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons (general category): 42 years.
  • OBC/ SC/ ST candidates will get the benefit of cumulative age relaxation. This means age relaxations gets added in special cases, say, for example, if the person is OBC + Ex-servicemen, he will get an extension of 3 + 5 = 8 years, ie his upper age limit now stands at 40 years.
