Yes, of course 12th state board absent or failed student can re-appear for boards exam next year as compartment exam but you will have to apply for it. Athough, you should have mentioned your state in your question so that you could have gotten a more accurate answer to your question.

Hello aspirant,

The State Board and CBSE claim that if a student does not show up for a test, they will label them as absent.

Thus, you may sit for the exam as a regular student the following year . So you can definitely give the exam next year. There is no such restriction.
