Average package means that most of the students get that amount of package. Average student is found out by summing up the package of all the students of that particular year and then dividing it by the total number of students. So if the average package of mining engineering of iit bhu is 7 lakhs per annum that means that most of the students get this amount of package.

There are students in Mining Engineering BHU, bagging 20+LPA Packages in SDE, Finane, Analytics Sector Roles, students bagging 10+ LPA Packages with Core Companies like Tata Steel, Coal India and Vedanta as well as many with packages between 5-10 LPA in various roles, some go for MBA to IIMs while some even remain unplaced. Overall the average package is 7 LPA  doesnt mean everyone's remuneration is around this target. In most of the Top IITs like Bombay, Delhi, KGP hence, a new term Median Package is used, which more correctly predicts the nearest remuneration, and is different from the statistical Average.
