Rainwater, slightly acidic from absorbing carbon dioxide, dissolves calcium carbonate as it seeps through rocks. This dissolved mineral is deposited inside a cave when the water drips from the ceiling and forms stalactites. On the cave floor, the deposited mineral forms stalagmites as water droplets containing dissolved calcium carbonate evaporate and leave the mineral behind.
