Thanks Seems. Yours is a very fundamental yet interesting question.

Let's see if the Cambridge Dictionary can be of some help. It defines Journalism as - "the work of collecting, writing, and publishing news stories and articles in newspapers and magazines or broadcasting them on the radio and television".

and it defines Mass Media as - "newspapers, television, radio, and the internet".

So from the definition itself, we can have a basic idea that while 'Mass Media' are the means to communication to the Public at large, Jounalism is a very specific activity that uses mass media. Journalism is a profession.

An Advertiser, a film-maker or a book publisher use mass media to get their ideas reach the public but they are not doing journalism. Journalism is very closely associated with News. Now, what is news is also a very elaborate question in itself but to keep things simple, lets settle with its definition, which is "information or reports about recent events."

However, a lot of colleges in India use the terms 'Mass Media' and 'Journalism' interchangeably and hence the confusion. I hope the above answer would help you to see the overlaps and differences betweent he two terms more clearly.
