The first paper of JEE mains is mandatory for all while the second paper i meant for the students who aspire for Architecture course as well.

If you have got good drawing skills and gifted with lot of creativity and imaginability then you should definitely write second paper as well.

Let's assume now that you are talking about MAINS only that is about the exams being held twice in a year. So it's up-to you when you want to appear. You can appear only once or twice your wish. Your best score will be considered for being eligible for JEE Advance. And the in JEE ADVANCE you need to clear both the papers 1 and 2 mandatorily which will be taken on the same day to get into IITS.

Dear candidate, JEE Mains paper 1 is for taking admission in B.Tech/B.E. courses in NITs, IIITs and other engineering colleges. If you seek admission in B.Arch & B.planning courses in popular Centrally funded Technical institutes (CFTIs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), then you should give Paper 2.
Its not mandatory to clear both the exams.
