In case of NITs, assistant professor posts are generally divided into two categories- 1)Assistant Professor (on Pre-PhD contract) and 2)Assistant Professor (Regular).

The baseline criteria are similar across most of the IITs or NITs, i.e A PhD in relevant area of specialisation or a Masters degree is compulsory(with a good academic record). Additionally, a minimum of 3 years of post-PhD experience in research/teaching/industry and a minimum of 3 research publications in referred high-impact or quality journals is really important.

If a candidate doesn't have 3 years of post-PhD experience, he/she can be considered for tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (provided one has good publications).
