Hii..

Mathematics is actually easy after practicing more. The more you practice the more easy it looks like. Try to read daily 1–2 hours of mathematics. Then you won’t feel that stressed.

Most of the questions are straightforward and there would be little tricky ones. So to get more marks, one needs to practice more.

These are the topics for GATE and some tips to prepare:

  1. Linear Algebra : Systems of linear equations can be solved by writing augmented matrix and finding ranks, Eigen values can be solved using | A λ x = 0 | |A−λx=0| and Eigen vectors can be solved using A x = λ x . Ax=λx. For each λ λ calculated, find the value of x. You can’t get unique solution. So find solution in terms of one variable.
  2. Calculus : local maxima and minima: find first derivative and set it to zero and check if second derivative is >0, <0 or =0. Taylor and Maclaurin series just learn the expansion of f ( x ) = f ( 0 ) + x f ( 0 ) + x 2 / 2 f ′′ ( 0 ) + . . . f(x)=f(0)+xf′(0)+x2/2f″(0)+... ; Evaluation of definite and indefinite integrals could be done by learning different types of problems and techniques to solve them, to calculate area use y d x ∫ydx ; Partial derivatives also practice more problems for continuity and differentiability checks; for Gradient, Divergence, Curl and Directional derivatives learn formulas and practice, Line, Surface and Volume integrals, Stokes, Gauss and Green’s theorems also practice them by using formulas. They are very easy.
  3. Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) : First order (linear and non-linear) equations could be solved by remembering the case to which it belongs; higher order linear equations with constant coefficients and Euler-Cauchy equations are direct formula based; Laplace transform should be learnt well and all formulas are to be learnt well; for solving linear ODEs apply Laplace transform and solve linear equations and for initial and boundary value problems by just use reverse Laplace.
  4. Partial Differential Equation (PDE) : Fourier series direct formula based; solutions of one- dimensional diffusion equation; first and second order one-dimensional wave equation and two-dimensional Laplace equation are all direct formula based. Practice more.
  5. Probability and statistics : learn Conditional probability; learn Poisson and Binomial distributions and relationships. next learn normal and exponential distributions and area of normal distribution curve. Next learn Mean, median, mode and standard deviations formulas for all above distributions.
  6. Numerical Methods : learn different Numerical solutions of linear and non-linear algebraic equations specially by Newton Raphson method. Learn Newton’s and Lagrange polynomials formulas. learn trapezoidal and Simpson’s rule formulas and practice. Learn different single and multi-step methods for first order differential equations and mainly focus on single step methods.

See that syllabus is easy if practiced well and formulas are well learnt. Practice previous GATE questions and material questions.

Hi Deepak,

There are good chances of clearing the mathematics in the GATE only if you prepare well.

All the best!
