Hello,

There are four levels of reading, they are:

  • elementary reading

  • inspectional reading

  • analytical reading,

  • syntopical reading.

Elementary reading

It is also known as rudimentary reading, basic reading or initial reading. Mastering this level is considered to make one pass from nonliteracy to at least beginning literacy. At this level you learn the rudiments of the art of reading, receives basic training in reading, and acquire initial reading skills.

Inspectional reading

This level is also called as skimming or pre-reading. The aim is to get more out of the book by examining the “surface” of the book.

Analytical reading

This is a more complex level for readers. This level is required if you are reading to improve understanding, but this level can be omitted if you are reading for the purpose of entertainment

Synoptical reading

Also called as comparative reading, this level of reading is the most difficult level of reading.  Here a reader reads different texts on the same topic and does a comparison to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of the subject.

Hope this helps
