Stages of decomposition.
Five general stages are used to describe the process of decomposition in vertebrate animals:

• fresh,
• bloat,
• active decay,
• advanced decay,
• and dry/remains.

The general stages of decomposition are coupled with two stages of chemical decomposition:
autolysis and putrefaction.
