Your AIR when you have percentile is dependent on the number of aspirants in the exam. Your percentile means how many students sit in the examination and from how many of them you have scored well. For example, there are 100 students in the exam and you percentile is 99 then you are ahead of 99% of the students sitting in the exam and you rank will be 1. However, different institutes use some different methods and therefore the rank varies.

For 99.87 percentile, you are ahead of 99.87 percent of the students who sits in the exam. So if the number of students is around 2 lacs(which is the case most times) your rank will be around 250-300.
