A nephron is a filtering unit in the kidney that removes waste from the blood and  substance its main function is to Filter blood , regulate blood pressure and volume, and control electrolyte homeostasis. They also secrete hormones like erythropoietin.

Structure

A nephron is made up of a glomerulus and a renal tubule. The glomerulus is a filter made up of a network of capillaries. The renal tubule is a long, pipe-like structure that carries filtered fluid.

Types

There are two types of nephrons:

Cortical nephrons: These nephrons have short loops of Henle and are located in the cortex. They make up about 85% of nephrons in humans.

Juxtamedullary nephrons: These nephrons have long loops of Henle and are located in the juxtamedullary region. They play a key role in concentrating urine.

Number

An adult human kidney has around one million nephrons. The number of nephrons a person has is determined at birth and depends on factors like gestational age and the mother's nutritional status.
