IIT stands for Indian Institue of Technology. These are autonomous public institution. The top 5 IITs are- IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur.
NIT stands for National Institute of Technology. These are also autonomous engineering college. The top 5 NITs are- NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela, NIT Karnataka, NIT Warangal and NIT Calicut.
Speciality-
IIT- IITs are the top most engineering college in India. Out of 23, eight of them are placed in top 10 rankings of MHRD-NIRF.
NIT- There are in total 31 NITs. Most of these offer degree courses at UG and PG in various branches. As per the NIRF rankinh 2020, NIT Trichy is the top NIT of India.
In general, both IIT and NIT are the top engineering instutues of India. But by stats, IIT is slightly better than NIT in cases of faculties, placements, research facility. But comparatively fees of NITs are cheaper than IITs.
