Hello

Before I suggest you a strategy, let me be very clear that a particular strategy might not be useful for all. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Hence you should do some deep self-introspection and devise your own strategy. However, here's a strategy that, in my opinion, should get you a decent rank.

Start your preparation in May. Focus just on developing your theortical base. GATE exam tests your basics. Hence it is quite essential that your concepts are clear. To test how much you much have grasped a concept, solve some standard questions (like previous years' questions)Do not study only one subject for 5 days(or 10 days) at a stretch and then next subject for another 10 days. Try to study the subjects in parallel, preferably atleast 2. This will help you increase your retentivity.Give sufficient time to your core subjects. Like for EE, study electrical machines, power system, and power electronics very thoroughly. Don't neglect these subjects under any circumstances.Do not neglect engineering mathematics and reasoning. These are very easy and very scoring. (You can clear the cut-off just by studying these two subjects :P)Don't hesitate to clear your doubts. Take help of your teachers and friends.Once you clear your doubts, chances are you won't forget them easily. In October, join a test series (which has part-syllabus tests) and try to cover up their part-syllabus tests by November end. This will help you identify the areas which need improvement. Work on them. (ACE has part-syllabus tests)In December, start taking subject tests. Try to take atleast two tests for each subject. Do not get depressed if you are unable to score well in subject tests. They are just for practice. Also, solve all previous years' questions thoroughly now in case you haven't till now. Do not keep them pending for January. In January, start taking full-syllabus tests. Try taking atleast 15 full syllabus tests. Your performance in full-syllabus tests will indicate your performance in actual GATE exam.If time permits, solve previous years' questions once again (in the last two weeks) to synchronize yourself with actual level of GATE questions.
I hope it will help you
Good luck.....
