Mechatronics is a subset, one of many specializations, under the broader category of Mechanical Engineering. As might be inferred from the name, it includes a certain amount of electronics and electrical engineering, largely in the area of motors and motion control, and the sensors to detect position and control that motion with feedback systems. Programming and tuning the feedback systems also often requires some software engineering. These different skillsets required are likely to be reflected in the academic coursework.
