So, NITs and IIITs both are for engineering but NIT stands for National Institute of Technology whereas IIIT stands for Indian Institute of Information technology.

Almost all the NITs are owned by government whereas just 3 IIITs are owned by government. 

If you get a choice, then you should definitely go for NITs first.
