Diploma in mechanical engineering is a 3 year course. You can join diploma course after your class 10. You will get exposure for what is mechanical engineering , you have to study first year concept of b.tech mechanical engineering. Many students join diploma in mechanical engineering after 10th.

After completing your 3 year diploma you can get direct admission in b.tech 2nd year through lateral entry . Almost every college provide admission through lateral entry if you start diploma just after 10 you will have two certificate i.e. diploma and degree both withing a time span of 6 years where's your friend's will end up with degree.

Eligibility for diploma students to get admission through lateral entry.

1. Candidate must have completed 3 year diploma course with at least 50% from a recognised board
2. Admission will be based on state entrance examination or college own examination.
3.You can take direct admission too.

For that process you need to get a seat into the degree to diploma category where you have to study for 3 years  at that college.. For getting into the college you need to fulfill its eligibility criteria and cut off, so that you can get mechanical engineering.
