Hello Vaibhav!

A woman can give to birth to twins and there are two ways for this to happen:-

  • one fertilized ovum divides into two and produces monozygomatic twins, and
  • two ova are fertilized and produce dizygomatic twins.

In the case of fraternal twins, two different eggs are fertilized by two different sperm creating genetically unique offspring. This can happen when two ova are consecutively released at the same time. These twins may be of the same or different gender and do not resemble each other.

When the fertilized egg splits into two eggs with exactly the same genetic makeup. This is the case with identical twins.(i.e when the cleavage(division) of the zygote, by mistake, results in two seperate zygotes which were fertilised by one sperm)

Hope you understood.
