Usually GATE exam is given by the students who want to to take admission in IIT for MTech and even for PHD. It is also given by the candidate who want to get a job in PSUs ( public sector undertaking in India) . These companies are owned by the union government of India or one of the many state or territorial governments or both. The company stock needs to be majority-owned by the government to be a PSU.
