It depends for which NIT you are talking because all NITs are not equal level. If you specify then accordingly I can help you about NITs & NISER.

You are mad because you are comparing a top notch research institute with an engineering institute which is not at all comparable. In NISER/IISER/IISc the research done is far better than that of IIT/NIT so if you want to go to research field opt for the former otherwise latter.
