Cotton University (formerly known as Cotton College) was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam. The Cotton College State University and Cotton College were merged in 2017 under the requirements of an Act passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly and formed the Cotton University. It  is recognised by the Universal Grants Commission (UGC).
