there is several subjects is included in gate exam apart from engineering and sciences discipline, like humanities, social science, psychology etc, based on gate score one can apply for masters or phd courses. now it depends on your latest qualifications and Interest of choices. IIT kanpur humanities and social sciences department offers phd courses in English, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology based on gate/net/ jrf scores.

the eligibility criteria is

Applicants must have a master's degree in the relevant subject or a bachelor's degree in Engineering or science (4 year programme) or a master's degree in sciences or in an allied field of HSS with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum*.

The candidate either must have a valid GATE score or must have qualified for/in JRF/NET. The requirement of GATE/JRF/NET is waived for candidates having a master's degree in science/arts from IITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0.
