The traditional core branches are evergreen, mechanical, civil, electrical fall into this category. You need to pick them as per your interest area. These branches give you both, job prospects, as well as option to go for higher studies.
Qualifying GATE in these streams, opens a plethora of opportunities in PSUs and other government services. Apart from these three branches, you can count Electronics Engineering too, if you are looking at the prestigious IES (Indian Engineering Services) conducted by UPSC. Only these 4 branches can apply for this exam.

Let's now talk about prospects in private sector. No doubt Computer Science Engineering beats other branches here. Though the IT sector hires candidates from all branches during campus placements, but a CS branch degree helps you if you are looking at MS or other higher research in computer science abroad. As far as working in Indian IT sector is concerned, choice of stream hardly matters to corporates.
And if you have plans for MBA immediately after engineering, then also it doesn't matter which branch, and if you want to go for MBA after 2-3 years of work-ex, then also it's your quality of work-ex that matters.

So, you need to decide on basis of your interest area, and what do you plan to do further in life after engineering.
