Top Engineering branches keep on changing as per the trend.
At present, CSE is on the top list following with mechanical core branch.

Apart from being in the trend it is important to know whether your interest lies in it or not.
Because lets say if you are interested in food or plants then computer science won't be of a great help for you.

So passion and interests does matter.
On an average you can expect a package of approx 4-5 lakhs as  fresher but good with skills and knowledge.

All the course/branches have good scope it depends on your interest and passion. You should choose a branch according to your interest.

If we compare the branches then CSE has good scope in future in terms of jobs and placements. Mainly the highest package is offered to CSE student only.
