2. Placements. Please check what companies have visited in the last five years and what were the highest and average salary offered. What percentage of eligible students were placed. Get it in writing from them.

3. Research and development . Please check how many Government sponsored research projects these institutes are having. That's why IITs have gained so much repute. The more the number of government sponsored projects means capable faculty members to have got them and also platform for the students to work in those projects and get exposure.

4. Teaching expertise and years of existence. Engineering colleges cannot survive without qualified, long serving and dedicated teachers. Check the teacher's profiles in the college website. Thumb rule is, if a reputed teacher is serving the college for more than 10-15 years, it means that college is good to the students as well as to the teachers.

5. Hostel and accommodation facilities. Residential colleges are the best colleges. Please inquire about the hostel facilities and also inquire about how many teachers live in the college campus. The more the number, means students can work with the teachers beyond the working hours which is very important. Also when parents visit the campus, do they get accommodation and food in the campus.

6. Infrastructure and facilities. These include food in the mess, what are the other options available like Canteen, cafeteria etc. How good the library is? The thumb rule is to check the number of books in the library, access to technical magazines, newspapers, journals, what is the size of the library.

7. Parents support system. How good is the college to ensure to make available the progress of the students to the parents on a regular basis.

8. Connectivity. How fast can you reach the college in case of any emergency or vice versa. Like how far from the airport or railway station or how far is the campus from the highway.

9. Extra and co curricular activities. Personality of a student is enhanced if he/she is given exposure to sporting facilities. Please check the availability of such facilities (gym, grounds, swimming pool etc.) in the campus concerned
