Soumitra Chatterjee or Soumitra Chattopadhyay, is an renowef actor , poet and artist from west Bengal.Born in 1935, Saumitra has been awarded with Falke award, Ordre des Arts des Lettres award - which is highest award of france for Artist, also Legion of Honour in 2018.

Soumitra Chatterjee was born on 19th January, 1935. He is an iconic Bengali actor, known among other things for his frequent collaborationss with the legendary Satyajit Ray. He was constantly compared with his Bengali contemporary Uttam Kumamr.. He studied at the Scottish Church College of University of Calcutta and graduated with honors in Bengali literature. He also passed the M.A exaination in Bengali. Before pursuing a career in fils he has worked in the All India Radio.

His film debut come in 1959  in Satyajit Ray's 'Apur Sansar". He was also cast in diverse roles by Ray and his screenplays.
He excelled in collaborations with other directors like Mrinal Sen and Tapan Sinha. He has also been active in Bengali theatre as an actor, playwright and director. He is also known for his beautiful recitation of poetry, acted on TV and in indigenous folk drama.

He has also received the "Officer des Arts et Metiers", which is the highest award for arts given by the Frehnch government, and a Lifetime Achievement award from Italy. He accepted the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award from the President of India. He has been the subject of a full-length documentary named Gaach by the French Director Catherine Berge.

One of his famous works is Ghare Bhaire, in which he played the lead role to Rabindranath's Tagore of the same name which was also Satyajit Ray's major venture of the 1980s This role showcased Chatterjee's versatility in playing diverse characters. He is known to be flamboyant and an extremely dedicated artist.
