So your rank being greater than the cutoff, is less likely to get a seat.

With this rank if you belong to general category then you can get mechanical engineering if only you have a very good luck. Although if you belong to some other category such as SC or ST then you can have a better chance of getting this branch but still it will be very difficult. Therefore you should try in other NITs if you aim to get a good branch. Hope this helps.

It is highly unlikely for you to get a seat in nit surathkal. Last year's closing rank for mechanical engineering home state category for thos college was 7178. So it will not be possible. If you want to try, you can try, but in my opinion, it might not be in favour of you.
