The earlier you start better it would be. The time depends from student to student as different people have different learning capacity of learning. The best you can do is first complete the course then try previous year papers and if you budget allow go for mock test series.
Coaching is not necessary to clear the GATE exam. You can clear it by just self study you must prepare a good time table and stick to it everyday. But if you need a coaching you can go with some good result oriented coaching in your locality.
