Is coursera certificate is helpful for interview?

Udit Narayan 18th Jun, 2020

Hello aspirant,

yes it is helpful in an Interview if and only if you can define and really explain what you really learnt from the course, if you are not able to do that than its just another certificate which will be added in your resume and have no value to it. Its very important to understand that whatever is there in your resume should be original and you should be able to speak something insightful on it for atleast 2 minutes than only your interview will actually go well.

Prepare well before your interview. Be thorough with your skills and whatever certificates you are attaching.

is courseras course certificate have any value for my future, or getting any job? (coursera online based learning app)

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 29th May, 2020

While we cannot vouch for 3rd party websites, this answer is being written on personal experience. Coursera is a recognised website and has good courses. The courses are valid across the Globe. The paid certificates do definitely carry a weightage. And when you have a certification in any subject or course, it gives added value to your CV. So just to answer your question, Coursera Certifications do have weightage when applying for jobs that match these skills that you have learnt.

Do yo have any arrangements where a student can study in India on Coursera and still gets a formal online international degree?

Yes, over the last 2- 2.5 years, the depth of the content on Coursera has been growing and what started as short MOOCs is now full online.  There are 19 degrees. So the same top universities who teach on Coursera, now 19 of them have degrees on the Coursera platform. As an example, The University of Pennsylvania which is in Ivy League University in the US has masters in Computers and Information Technology on Coursera and the admission process, faculty, is the same and it's one fourth the cost because online courses are a lot more cost efficient and degree is the same. There are 19 such degrees  that are available. These are in the areas of Computer science, data science, Management programs (MBA), and Public Health.

We see a lot of people from India applying for these degrees and studying these degrees as well because the student then has a choice between masters in IT from an Indian University which may or maynot be high quality or to do it from overseas in a top quality institution and at the same time continue to work because work can be continued with an online degree. So we do see quite a few students applying from India.

At the undergraduate level there is a Bachelor's in Computer Science at the University of London.

What steps should a student follow to get a degree through Coursera?

Let's take computer science engineering as an example, to do engineering one needs to get 160 credits over four years. Government has declared that 20% of those 160 credits can be delivered by high quality online platforms. So, 20% of 160 is 32 and 32 divided by 4 years is 8 Coursera courses per year because this can be embedded as a part of an engineering course student is doing so this has to be done by the University. It can't be done by students in their personal capacity. So universities have to tell students to take 8 courses per year on Coursera and they will get credit when they complete those courses and these will eventually count towards your degree. Many colleges and universities are doing that. Manipal University, Jaipur, Pearl Academy, Shiv Nadar has been doing that.

The recent announcement that the finance minister has spoken about is slightly different because that's a fully online degree.

What kind of courses are offered by Coursera for students?

Coursera started from Stanford University in 2012. Our co-founders were both Stanford University professors and we think about ourselves as a global learning e-course system. So there are learners on our platform, there are educators and today there are around 170 universities and 40 leading companies. Leading Universities like Yale University, Michigan, Integral College London and as of now, In India, IBS hyderabad and IIM Calcutta are the ones who create the content on Coursera platform.

From job steadiness point, the companies that create the content on Coursera will also be useful. Companies like Google, Amazon, IBM creates content on our platform. On our enterprise platform, Coursera works with about 2300 organisations and also with campuses. So these companies are many of those companies which students might aspire to work at, for example Infosys, Airtel, Axis Bank, etc.

These educators who are Coursera partners have created almost 4200 courses. These are called MOOCs (Massive open online courses) which usually are 12-15hours in duration. If one has to take a series of courses, it is called a specialisation. Today, we provide full online degrees as well.

There are many domains of content but the biggest usage is in the domains of business, technology and data science whether they are working professionals or students in colleges as well.
