is btech in cse better or cs and design

Nikita shahi 23rd Jul, 2025

Hii,

That’s a great question, and it really depends on your interests and career goals. BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a more traditional and technical route. It focuses deeply on programming, algorithms, data structures, etc. If you're into hardcore coding, backend development, AI/ML, or cybersecurity, CSE will give you the core skills you need.

On the other hand, CS with Design is a more interdisciplinary course. It combines core computer science subjects with user experience (UX), interface design, human-computer interaction, and product design thinking. If you enjoy creativity and want to build digital products that are both technically sound and user-friendly, this can be a great path.

In terms of career opportunities, both fields are growing. CSE graduates often go into tech roles like software developer, data scientist, or cloud engineer. CS+Design students can become UX designers, front-end developers, or work in product teams at tech companies like Google, Microsoft, or startups.

Thanks and good luck choosing what suits you best!

I am planning to join Maven Silicon in Bangalore for a VLSI Design course. Is it a good finishing school? Also, how are the job opportunities after completing the course?

Nikita shahi 23rd Jul, 2025

Hello,

If you’re planning to enter the VLSI field. Maven Silicon in Bangalore is actually quite a reputed institute for VLSI Design. It’s known more as a finishing school or training institute rather than a college, and it provides industry-oriented training with hands-on tools like Verilog, SystemVerilog, and EDA tools used in chip design.

Also, VLSI is a niche but booming domain, especially with India’s push toward semiconductor manufacturing. If you're serious about this field and want to upskill after engineering, then Maven is a solid choice to consider.

All the best, and thanks for reaching out!

Im planning to join a finishing school for a VLSI Design course. Can anyone suggest the best finishing school for this program?

Nikita shahi 12th Jul, 2025

Hello,

VLSI is one of the career paths students prefer after B.Tech in electronics. Joining a finishing school or specialized training institute can be a great step after completing your B.Tech or M.Tech in Electronics or related fields. These institutes help you to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry expectations, especially in a core field like VLSI. There are some of the  well-known institutes in India that are popular for VLSI Design training;

CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) provides the VLSI Design and Embedded Systems course, especially, at Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad centers. It is a government-recognized institution, and placements are quite good.

Maven Silicon (Bangalore) offers full-time VLSI design programs focusing on RTL Design, Verification, and SystemVerilog. If you are a fresher aiming to enter a semiconductor company.

SITARAM (Silicon Institute of Technology) and ChipEdge are known for practical VLSI projects and tool-based learning.

When you are shortlisting a finishing school, keep these points in your mind:Course curriculum should include hands-on work on tools like Cadence, Synopsys, etc, Faculty experience, Internship or live project opportunities, and, Past placement records. If you are a working student you can also check some finishing schools which offer hybrid or weekend batches. You can also explore government-supported finishing schools like NIELIT, or check out colleges with AICTE-approved finishing school tie-ups.

Wishing you success in your VLSI career ahead!

The highest package offered was around 110 LPA in India and about 122 LPA for international roles. The average package for undergraduate students was around 19 LPA, which is really good. Most students who got placed received packages above 10 LPA.

If Im interested in designing but scored a descent rank in JEE mains which is the better option ISDI Mumbai ( Product design) or NIT Rourkela (b.tech in industrial design)?

Shubham Jha 11th Jun, 2025

Dear student,

If you're passionate about design and have a decent JEE Main rank, the choice between ISDI Mumbai (Product Design) and NIT Rourkela (B.Tech in Industrial Design) comes down to your goals.

ISDI Mumbai is a pure design institute focused on creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning. The program emphasizes real-world projects, portfolio building, and exposure to Mumbai’s design industry. It’s best for those who want a career in creative design , user experience, or product innovation. Admission is based on the ISDI Challenge , not JEE.

NIT Rourkela , on the other hand, offers a design-oriented B.Tech that blends engineering and product design. It’s a good fit if you're looking for a technical degree with a design element . The course includes CAD, UX, manufacturing, and product development. Admission is through JEE Main and JoSAA , with strong placements and a top-tier campus.

Your decision should align with whether you see yourself as a designer first or an engineer with design skills .

Take your time

My Rank is around 16000 in JEE Mains , I can get cs in many NITs but I am also interested in designing . Is industrial design at rourkela a good option. (I was never interested in computer/coding)

gopi 10th Jun, 2025

Hello Aspirant,

If your rank in JEE Mains is 16000 you're not out of the woods for getting Computer Science in some NITs. But as you said "I'm not really interested in coding or about anything that is computers" it is reasonable to look somewhere else.
If you like designing, creative thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications Industrial Design at NIT Rourkela is a great option for you. The Industrial Design department is very established at NIT Rourkela and teaches product design, ergonomics, CAD tools, and has an innovation-centric simulated learning approach. Graduates move into products design, UI/UX, automotive, consumer technology, and many other roles, or pursue design masters courses in NID, IDC-IITB etc.
If you want to consider all your options, I believe picking a branch that you have an interest such as Industrial Design will lead to a better settled career than simply going for CSE for the tag. One must be knowledgeable in whatever career path they settle into, but in fields like creativity and design interest and passion are incredibly important.

How to prepare portfolio for design entrance test

Samriddha Pal 5th Jun, 2025

Hello,

To prepare a good portfolio, first understand the specific requirements of the institution you are applying to—whether it's NID, NIFT, MIT, or any private design school and make sure to choose a diverse selection of your best and most original works. Originality is the key. Include works like still life, human figures, product designs, posters, fashion illustrations, or any DIY or conceptual projects. Make sure to organize them thoughtfully—begin with your strongest piece and group related works together. Always include a short caption or description below each piece, explaining your inspiration, process, tools used, or what you were trying to express.

Hope this helps. All the best!
