There are many movements in India against the environmental degradation. Chipko movement is one of them. It started in 1970. The villagers of Himalaya in Uttarakhand started the movement. They resided at foothill of Himalaya. One of them started this who ties a sacred thread on trunk of huge trees and then hugged them. Then it was spread in Uttar pradesh. In Tehri district Chipko activists went to protest the limestone mining in Dun Valley in the 1980's, as the movement spread across the Dehradun district, before its forests were seen causing extensive damage to flora and fauna. Excavation was finally banned after years of movement by Chipko activists, then massive public drive for precautionary measures began that turned the valley around from time to time. One of main features of Chipko is the wide participation of female villagers. As the backbone of Uttarakhand's agrarian economy, women were the most directly affected by environmental degradation and deforestation and thus it is very easily related  to issues. The extent to which this partnership has been influenced or achieved by the Chipko norm has been hotly debated in academic circle. The news soon reached the state capital, where the then state chief minister Hembati Nandan formed a committee to investigate the multi-faceted matter, which ultimately ruled in favor of the villagers. it became a turning point in the history of the eco-development struggle in the region and around the world. In October 1971, the staff of Bigghar demonstrates a protest of Gopaswar to protest against the principles of forest  department. In the end of 1972, more assembly and March were held in March, but there is little effect, decision to take direct action. The forest department took place  when the forest department stops the annual request of Sangah for ten ash trees for its farm equipment workshop, and instead of creating tennis racquet, a sports photographer in Allahabad provides 300 trees deal to Simon Company.

1. Bishnoi Movement: It was started in Rajasthan by Amrita Devi in 1700s. Its aim was to save trees from being cut down by the king's soldiers for a new palace.
2. Chipko Movement: It was started in 1973 in Chamoli district. It's main leader was Sundarlal Bahuguna. It's aim was to protect the trees on the Himalayan slopes from the axes of contractors of the forest.
3. Save Silent Valley: It was started in 1978 in Silent Valley. The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad and Sughatkumari were the main leaders. It's aim was to protect the Silent Valley from being destroyed by a hydroelectric project.
4. Jungle Bachao Andolan: It was started in 1982 in Singhbhum by the Tribals of Singhbhum. It was against government's decision to replace the natural Sal forest with Teak.
5. Appiko Movement: It was started in 1983 in Uttar Kannada and Shimoga district. It was not driven by a personality. It's aim was against the felling and commercialization of natural forest and the ruin of ancient livelihood.
