IELTS General Training is the only internationally available English proficiency test accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for immigration to Canada. To gain a Canadian visa, you will need to demonstrate your English abilities to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). 

• All universities and colleges in Canada accept IELTS, as well as all professional associations have set minimum language requirements for professional registration.

To be eligible for Express Entry, you must prove your English language ability:

• take a language test

To measure your English, IELTS use Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English. The minimum level for all four abilities is CLB 7.  

The skills you need will depend on the group your job is classified in under the National Occupational Classification System (NOC). The skill level for CLB 7 is NOC 0 or A and for CLB 5 is NOC B.

Your test results must be less than two years old when you submit your application for permanent residence. If you’ve been invited to apply for permanent residence, check that your language test results will still be valid when you plan to apply.

You can take any of these approved language tests: English 

CELPIP – Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program

(you must take the CELPIP-General test since they don’t accept the General-LS test for Express Entry.)

IELTS – International English Language Testing System

(you must take the General Training option, they don’t accept the Academic option for  Express Entry)

• If you haven’t been invited to apply for permanent residence

You may want to make sure your results are valid for the rest of the time you’ll be in the pool.

If your results will expire before you can apply, you should:

• be tested again or

• apply before your test results expire or

• decline the invitation and go back into the pool to be considered in the future

• Individual organisations have different requirements. Make sure you check which IELTS test the organisation you are applying to recognises.

Dear Dhruvil, there is no set eligibility criteria for appearing for IELTS. IELTS is not an entrance examination. It is a language proficiency test taken for admission into foreign Universities where English is the native language. So, the better time to appear for IELTS is when you want to go abroad either for higher studies or job prospects. The better your score, better the chances of landing admissuons from top Universities. 

Dear Kavya, IELTS results are usually out after 13 days of taking the test. The conducting authorities of IELTS allow international students to send IELTS score to five universities of their choice, which they have to select at the time of registration. Once you select five universities, the test center forwards copies of your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) to them free of cost. They will be sent electronically, however, there are some cases where the institutes require hard copies of IELTS test report forms. Institutions that have subscribed to electronic download of the TRF will receive the results electronically. For institutes that require original TRF, you can ask your IELTS test centre to send the TRF copy via airmail with an additional cost of USD 3.75. If you want to send it via courier to international destinations, you must pay USD19. Further, you can also attach copies of your IELTS TRF to your university application form.You will receive only one copy of your IELTS test result form. The TRF has your photograph on it and an inbuilt security system so that it cannot be copied or altered. Hope this helps.
