which books are recommended for NSO & IMO 2nd PREPARATION

sarthak goel 15th Jan, 2020

Hello Krish,

Kindly mention which class NSO and IMO you are talking about.

Practising NCERT and your school books question is advisable. Download previous year questions, and some preparatory books ussually MCQs of science. When talking about IMO, since most of the portion is mathematics, practising many books as well as other competitions papers can be an option. There are several other exams such as NTSE, NSTSE, RMO(for 10th), and many more. It is important to remember that the topics will be the same as that of the school syllabus however the level will be upgraded, therefore, try practising tricky and more logical questions of that topic.

For NSO, science is involved learning NCERT will be extremely beneficial especially for biology and chemistry related questions.

Try solving Mental ability questions from legit books, and forget to solve sample papers and previous year papers. Download from here:

hope this helps

my daughter took nso. as per ans key her score is m1=4. m2=27. m3 section 15. what is her chance of possibility for level 2

SAKSHI KULSHRESHTHA 20th Dec, 2019

Ma'am, whether your child will qualify for the next round or not depends on various factors like her class, difficulty level of question paper and her relative performance w.r.t. other students of her class (school, zone as well as national level). We cannot predict it on the basis of last year cutoffs.

According to the official notice by SOF, students fulfilling either of the following 3 criteria will qualify for 2nd level Olympiads exams:

  • Top 5% of students, class wise who appear for the 1st level exam. Due priority to marks scored in different sections will be given, in the decreasing order of Achiever's Section, Science and Logical Reasoning for NSO.
  • Zone wise top 25 rank holders from each class.
  • Class topper from each participating school where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores 50% qualifying marks.

All the best for the results.

Hello Mahak,

For NSO Level 2, the syllabus is same as level 1. Only, the difficulty level will be higher than level 1. Level 2 is difficult but with regular practice you can score a good rank. Attempt NSO level 2 previous years question papers and mock tests.

Basically syllabus is divided into 4 sections.

  • Section 1: Logical reasoning- Patterns, coding decoding, mirror images, geometrical shapes, analogy and classification, water images, embedded figures, ranking test, alphabet test, logical sequence of words,  puzzle test, direction sense test
  • Section 2: Science- Human body and health, plants, earth and Universe, matter, natural resources, force, work, energy, Pollution and calamities
  • Section 3: Achievers section- same as section 2 but higher order of thinking

Good luck!

Hello Im kush Pachauri and Im studying in class11th PCM and Im in weak Chemistry and Maths So how can I improve my weak subjects jor JEE , BITSAT, NSO. May I joined coaching for improve my skills and maths and chemistry .Plzz suggest me what should I do..? Im in Agra Plzz tell me best coaching..

rehan18alam Student Expert 29th Nov, 2019

Dear aspirant,

If you are facing struggles with any of your main subjects then the first thing you should do is buy a good book of that subject. the type of questions that has been asked in competitive exams and your boards are quite different and required a different methodology to study them. The questions in your board examinations are more concentrated on direct application of the concept on the definition of the concept itself however the questions in competitive examinations are more of application of that concept. if you are in 11th class then you have a plenty of time to first get your basics clear and then I want to prepare for competitive exams in your next year.

Coaching is always a good idea if you are facing a lot of trouble in understanding the concepts you can always join a coaching.

Some of the good institutions for preparation are

RESONANCE, Aakash institute, etc.

Hope this helps. thank you.

Hii... Im kush Pachauri and Im studying in class11th PCM and I got 60.5% in class 10th.So, May I crack JEE, BITSAT,NSO and other scienceOlympiad exams with out coaching. My DOB is 2sep,2005 in 10th marksheet. And I want to become an astronomy scientist in my life.Plzzz suggest me what should I do..?

Harshita Gupta 29th Nov, 2019
Hey Kush,
You can crack all the exams you wish to without any coaching for sure. All you need to do is focus on your goals.
Going to coaching doesn't help if you don't study at home afterwards. I am myself going to coaching for GATE Exams. But regardless of that, I have to study at home for my exams.
So don't worry about this, just work hard for what you want.
Now about, Astronomy scientist,
For that you will have to complete your graduation and you will have to complete 12th from science stream.
  • Eligibility criteria for becoming Astronomy scientist is that you have to be a graduate in B.sc or any equivalent examination with 50% score.
  • After 10+2, you can do B.sc with mathematics and physics as your subjects.
  • If you want to pursue experimental or instrumentation astronomy, then you can go for electrical engineering after 10+2. Then you will have to give an entrance exam called JEST which will make you eligibile for specialisation in astronomy and you can also do Ph.D. To become an astronomer, Ph.D. is compulsory.
Many colleges may take their own entrance exam.
Hope this helps!
