AFTER MBBS we want to do Specialist programs in NEUROLOGY how to proceed?

gopi 16th May, 2025

Hello Aspirant,

If you want to become a neurologist after completing your MBBS, the pathway is generally as follows:

  1. Complete Your postgraduate MD/MS Degree: Typically, the first step is a postgraduate degree in General Medicine (MD) or Pediatrics (MD), as Neurology is a super-specialty course that also requires a postgraduate degree first.
  2. Apply for DM (Doctorate of Medicine) in Neurology: After you have the MD, you can apply for DM in Neurology, a super specialty course which takes 3 years as per normal practice. Admission will include undergoing competitive entrance exams conducted by different institutes (e.g. AIIMS, PGIMER etc.)
  3. Prepare for the Entrance Exams: Make sure you are well prepared for the DM Neurology entrance examinations which will contain both general medicine and clinical neurology questions.
  4. Completing the DM Neurology Program: During this training you will obtain both clinical and research experience within the field of neurology, and will become a certified neurologist.
  5. Optional Fellowships: Later, you can pursue as many fellowships as you want for specialty qualifications in areas such as stroke, epilepsy, neurologic, etc.
