It is compulsory only for NITs/IIITs/IITs anf GFTIs.

You should have 75% marks in your boards or you should be in top 20 percentile.

Yes, it is beneficial you can re-appear in your exam or you can given 2 or 3 subjects exam to get 75% marks.
