National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education on behalf of UGC. From December session, NET will be conducted by NTA. This exam is conducted for determining the eligibility of Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges.

Candidates who qualify for the award of Junior Research Fellowship are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for Assistant Professor. The award of JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both or Eligibility for Assistant Professor only will depend on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of NET. You can apply for the position of Assistant Lectureship as and when the vacancies are announced. While, the validity period of the offer of JRF is two years from the date issue of JRF award letter. In case candidates who have already joined M.Phil/Ph.D., the date of commencement of fellowship shall be from the date of declaration of NET result or date of their joining, whichever is later.

Once you Clear UGC NET, you are eligible to be a lecturer of that opted subject in any of the Indian university. With the legal announcement of the Supreme Court ,UGC NET/CSIR-NET-JRF has been made compulsory requirement for appointment as a lecturer in Indian universities. This is the job opportunity NET is offering you. Besides this, you can start research under any guide, with a decent amount of fellowship.

Once you clear NET, you will be awarded the certificate. As per now, UGC provides E Certificate for NET ( If you are qualified for JRF, you will be asked to send details like PG mark list). After getting Certificate, you can use it as the usual one and its the duty of employer to login to the UGC’s website and confirm your eligibility.
