Hi,
Around 13 lac applicants register for JEE main. Then on the basis of overall performance ,cutoffs are decided such that 2 lac students are declared as qualified for writing JEE-ADVANCED examination.
From 2017 year(Note).
1. There shall be no weightage for the 12th class marks in calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) examination,
2. For the candidates to qualify for the admission in the IITs/NITs/IIITs and such other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Advanced)/JEE(Main) ranks, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.
In 2018, over 1,300,000 candidates appeared for the JEE exam for admission to 28,000 undergraduate engineering seats in 68 centrally-funded technical institutes that included all 19 IITs (10,000 seats), 31 NITs (15,500 seats) and 18 IIITs (2,500 seats).
Since 2 lac applicants qualify JEE mains and the No. of seats in NITs in total is around 15,500. You can expect a high competetion amongst them to get a desired seat which is solemnly done on rank basis which will be calculated on the basis of scores obtained in JEE main.
Thus,Qualifying MAIN examination doesn’t guarantee you a seat in NIT.
Best luck!!
