  • genetic code is the set of rules by which the information is encoded in genetic material DNA or RNA sequences is translated into proteins (amino acid sequences) by living cells.

  • Specifically,here the code defines a mapping between tri-nucleotide sequences called codons
  • The amino acids of every triplet of nucleotides in a nucleic acid sequence specifies a single amino acid.
  • The code is highly similar among all the organisms and can be expressed in a simple table with 64 entries.
  • The code will defines how sequences of nucleotide triplets, called codons, specify which amino acid will be added next during protein synthesis.

The genetic code is the set of rules by which information encoded in genetic material (DNA or RNA sequences) is translated into proteins (amino acid sequences) by living cells.

Theoretically, the genetic code is universal. This means that the same codon "means" the same amino acid in all organisms.

For a better understanding let's  take an example

In both humans and bacteria, a codon made of three thymine DNA-letters will code for an amino acid called Phenylalanine. There are about twenty amino acids, and about 64 codons.
